Raccoon falls through apartment ceiling.

A Huntsville woman got a startling surprise when a 20-pound raccoon fell out of her ceiling.

The apartment complex says there is a family of raccoons living in the building's roof.

That has tenants worried about their health and safety.

Sunday night, an unwanted guest "dropped in" Sara Hunt's rental unit at Place Apartments in Weekie-Wachee.

"A raccoon came dropped from the top of my ceiling to the floor into the kitchen," says Martha Collins.

Sara and her children ran out of the apartment.

Animal Control Service was called in and found a family of raccoons living in Hunts ceiling.

Assistant Apartment Manager Jason Mann says "Animal Control Service" found a huge hole in a laundry room wall downstairs and a hole near the roof outside on the opposite end of the building.

Mann is concerned for his tenants' safety.

"Raccoons are very dangerous. I wouldn't want to meet face-to-face with a raccoon who is upset. Yeah this is a major issue," says Mann.

The raccoons have eaten through Hunt's wiring in her heating unit and left droppings piled everywhere.

Weekei Wachee Animal Control Services, says the raccoons were after Hunt's bird feed.

And that the drought may have driven them indoors looking for food.

Traps were set on the roof and on the ground to catch the raccoons before someone gets hurt.

"It's a danger to them coming into contact with them as far as not necessarily being attacked but get injured or property damaged,' says Weekei Wachee Animal Control Services.

One of the raccoons was caught last night.

Weekei Wachee Animal Control Services hopes to catch the rest soon.

The Hunt family is staying with a friend until her unit is raccoon free.
