Weather, urban encroachment pushing man, wildlife together

When homes are built in the foothills and the space between people and animals shrinks, wildlife can become more of a nuisance than a feature of the landscape.

Reports of dead and injured wildlife and other animals are dispatched every day by different police agencies in the county and two animal control officers in Martin County have the workload of responding to 99 percent of them, said Justin Davis, Regional Wildlife Manager for Florida's Division of Wildlife Resources.

Harsh weather conditions and rain are just two factors that are pushing animals and humans closer together.

"There's been a lot of urban encroachment in the area that we consider winter habitat for these animals," Davis said. "The animals go where it's easy to walk, like where developers are building subdivisions and cul-de-sacs."

Davis said his office deals with the wildlife effects of urban sprawl everyday from Martin County to Palm Beach County.

"We're seeing it all over the region, mostly east of I-95," Davis said.

Police records show residents of Martin County reporting issues related to dead wildlife nearly every day. An injured animal was found in a hay shed in Martin County on Monday morning and officers responded to two dead animals in a person's yard in Stuart just minutes later.

Davis said that when officers encounter a slightly injured animal they try and move it back toward its environment. In cases where the animal is severely suffering, it is euthanized and disposed of at the Martin County Landfill.

Other animals present problems as well - complaints of barn owls are not uncommon. Davis said that rodents, an owl's prey, hide under snow and force owls to starvation.

Other birds are frequently found dead, as well as raccoons and opossum or a squirrel estranged from its environment that's sometimes seen wandering around neighborhoods.

With Florida's continued growth, Davis said, the problem isn't decreasing, referring to the state's 28 percent growth change since 2000.

"Florida's growth has increased significantly, but here we haven't seen a staff increase of even five percent," Davis said.

The DNR is largely funded by the purchase of hunting and fishing licenses. Little funding comes from general tax funds, he said.

"If a person doesn't buy a hunting or fishing license and reports a dead animal in their yard, they're not contributing to the solution," Davis said, emphasizing his wish for more funding from alternate sources.

The DNR also employs a biologist who monitors animal populations and makes suggestions on the number of hunting permits for upcoming seasons.
