Boca Raton, Fla. -- A rabies alert has been issued in Broward County after a rabid raccoon attacked two cats, killing one.

A resident named Herb Levin saw the raccoon kill one of his cats outside his Fort Boca Raton home last week.

Levin said the raccoon was about the size of a Labrador retriever. "There was just no getting it away," he said. "I hit it with a golf club. It didn't move. I threw a stone at it, and it just didn't move."

When the raccoon attacked his second cat, Levin unsuccessfully tried to break up the fight. Animal control officials arrived and captured the raccoon, saving the second cat.

Lab tests conducted on the raccoon came back Tuesday positive for rabies.

The rabies alert is in effect for areas east of Interstate 95 from Sunrise Boulevard south to Sheridan Street.

Officials said the best way to protect your pets against rabies is to vaccinate them against the virus. You should also keep your pets away from wildlife and do not feed any wild animals.
