Urban wildlife and a deadly trap turned the Adams family's Friday night into a horrifying one.

A trap on the roof of their apartment was sprung by a male raccoon about 9:30 p.m. The animal screamed in pain for about 15 minutes before falling off the roof.

However, the trap held fast and the raccoon hung itself, right in front of the Adam's balcony window. John Adam came home from work to find the 20- to 25-pound raccoon hanging in front of the window, still twitching as it died a slow death.

"My oldest daughter cried for the longest time," said Jennifer Adams, whose six children range in age from 13 to 17. "She told me 'Mama, I could still hear it screaming in my head.' She said it sounded like a child being beaten to death. ... It was terrible. I grew up in the country and I have seen animals die. But it was just disturbing."

The animal's carcass hung in front of her window until about "3:30 or 4 p.m." Saturday -- about 18 hours total. Jennifer called an emergency number for the apartment complex's maintenance crew Friday night and again -- about 9 a.m. Saturday. At least three more calls were made before the raccoon was removed.

Jennifer said she started to hear animals scuttling around on her ceiling right after the family moved in on Aug. 1.
